OCEANSIDE —
An Oceanside resident confronted a group of armed intruders who broke into his
home early Wednesday and fatally shot one of them, authorities said.
A second man also was shot, although police aren’t sure if that person was shot
by the resident or wounded when other intruders fired weapons, police
spokesperson Jennifer Atenza said.
The resident was uninjured.
Officers were called to the home on Moonstone Bay Drive near Marblehead Bay
Drive shortly after 1:15 a.m. They found inside a 31-year-old man suffering from
a gunshot wound, Atenza said. Police and paramedics rendered medical aid, but
the man died before he could be taken to a hospital.
His name has not been released.
Other officers responding to the shooting pulled over a
vehicle carrying several people near Douglas Drive and found a 29-year-old man
inside who had been shot.
That man was taken a hospital and was reported in stable
condition, Atenza said.
Detectives determined the shootings occurred after six people
— five men and one woman — forced their way into the home and attempted to rob
the resident. During the robbery, a resident “retrieved a gun and shot at the
suspects, striking the decedent,” Atenza said in a statement. “It is unknown at
this time if this same resident shot the second suspect, who is currently in the
hospital, or if this suspect was shot by one of the other suspects who were also
armed with a gun.”
Atenza didn’t know how many weapons police seized or if anyone
else was home at the time of the robbery. No information about the resident was
released.
“The resident reached for the firearm and then shots were
fired,” she said. “We know that at least one of the suspects was armed and
returned fire.”
Police said they arrested five people on
suspicion of murder and robbery,
including Deshawn Ingram, 29, of Oceanside; Eric Dunnigan, 21, of Vista; Michael
Simmons, 21, of San Diego; Jaylen Harvey, 24, of Oceanside; and Sydni Tucker,
25, of Oceanside.
Atenza said Ingram was recently convicted of assault with a
deadly weapon in connection with an Oceanside case in April, and was out on
bond, awaiting sentencing.
